Photo Credit: Ducky While I am not an expert and I am not qualified to offer medical advice to anyone, I am a woman, a nurse, and a person with enough common sense to know that judges, lawyers, politicians, priests, religious zealots, Supreme Court justices, presidential candidates, talk show hosts, the Pope, rapists, people who claim they are 'pro-life', news journalists, or people obsessed with controlling women are not qualified to provide or dictate reproductive healthcare. Doctors are qualified to provide healthcare (including reproductive healthcare), although it is noted that some doctors allow "god" rather than their medical training to guide their practice when it comes to women's bodies. While abortion has been made into a dirty word by some people, it is healthcare. In fact, the medical term for a miscarriage is a Spontaneous Abortion. But women never say they're having a spontaneous abortion, because in 1985, doctors at St Mary's Hospital in London decided that a spontaneous abortion deserved to be differentiated by terming it a miscarriage, with the term "abortion" signaling an elective termination of a pregnancy. Their claim was that women were offended by the word "abortion." My claim is they wanted to differentiate the terms due to their own distaste for women being allowed to terminate their pregnancies. **On a Horrifying Side Note** "Among St Mary's founders was the surgeon Isaac Baker Brown, a controversial figure who performed numerous clitoridectomies at the London Surgical Home, his hospital for women, and who "immediately set to work to remove the clitoris whenever he had the opportunity of doing so." It is well documented that this doctor's mission was to stop women from masturbating. Pregnancy is not risk-free and abortions are an important part of women's health. Here are just a few complications women may endure: ***NONE OF THIS IS MEDICAL ADVICE. SEEK AN EXPERT FOR ALL YOUR HEALTHCARE QUESTIONS AND TREATMENTS. CALL 911 FOR EMERGENCIES. -Ectopic pregnancy: This is when a fertilized egg implants itself outside the uterus. It can be in the fallopian tube, the ovary, the stomach or the cervix. As the fetus grows, it causes damage and complications. This is often a medical emergency. If left untreated, it can lead to severe pain, bleeding, hemorrhage, rupture of internal organs, infertility, infection, sepsis, and death. The treatment is medication to stop fetal growth (possibly Methotrexate) and surgical removal of the developing fetus and other tissues of pregnancy. (Sounds like an abortion!) -Miscarriage (a.k.a. Spontaneous Abortion): This is when the fetus dies inside the uterus up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. If left untreated, it can lead to severe pain, fever, bleeding, hemorrhage, infection, sepsis, endometrial damage, future infertility, and death. The treatment is medication (possibly mifepristone or misoprostol) and surgical removal of the fetus and other tissues of pregnancy. (Sounds like an abortion!) -Stillbirth: This is when the fetus dies inside the uterus after 20 weeks of pregnancy. If left untreated, it can lead to pain, fever, bleeding, infection, sepsis, endometrial damage, future infertility, and death. The treatment is to remove the contents of the uterus (with medication or surgically), including the fetus, the umbilical cord, the placenta, and other tissues from the pregnancy. (Sounds like an abortion!) So. For all the asshole politicians pushing laws that control women's bodies, ban abortions, and make the life-saving drugs that save women's lives during miscarriages unattainable, stop trying to hide your perversions behind god and the bible. Stop calling yourselves pro-life. We see who you are. And we'll remember your names when we head to the polls in November.
